AI chat, coding assistant or desktop agent? Choose by the work

A practical checklist for choosing an AI assistant: tool access, context, voice, approvals and a result you can inspect.

Start with a task, not a model name

For understanding a topic or reviewing a draft, a general AI chat may be enough. For changing a software project, test a coding assistant in the real repository. For changing something in an app or moving information between files and websites, test an agent with the relevant tools and permissions. These categories overlap and products change. Choose by work you can verify.

1. Test access to your actual tools

A service name on an integrations page does not mean every operation is available. Can the assistant read, write, and use the correct account? Try a small reversible task and inspect the result in the service itself.

2. Return to the task another day

Start with two files and one clear decision. Leave the conversation and return. Is the context still there? Does the assistant distinguish completed work from the next step? Continuing a small task should not require explaining your whole project again.

3. Ask for something you can inspect

Try a summary with source references, a spreadsheet with numbers you can compare, or a presentation you can edit. Check sources, calculations and layout. Creating a file does not establish that its contents are correct or ready to send.

4. Try voice the way you really speak

Use your actual accent and language, a known client name, and a mixed-language sentence if that is how you work. Compare the text inserted into the intended field. Recording quality and the context around a name affect the result.

5. Test stopping and approval

Before sending, paying or changing important files, understand the approval mode. Stop a simple task and send a correction. You should know whether that update has been applied or is waiting, and be able to inspect the steps.

6. Separate cloud work from your computer

A task that needs an installed app or a local file needs that computer online. If a product offers independent cloud execution, check the supported operations, accounts, permissions and costs.

Where Saywork fits

Saywork focuses on everyday work across voice, files, the browser and desktop apps. Begin with one real task and inspect its result, history and limits. If a general chat or coding assistant fits your task better, choose based on that experience.
