Looking for a Dragon alternative? What modern dictation does differently
Dragon taught a generation to dictate. Modern AI dictation cleans up what you say, mixes languages and can finish the task too. Here's what changes if you switch.
Dragon has been the name in dictation for decades, and for many professionals it still does the job. But dictation has changed, and if you're looking around, it helps to know what's actually different now.
You no longer dictate punctuation
Classic dictation types what you say, literally, and you speak the commas. Modern AI dictation, Saywork included, writes finished text: punctuation where it belongs, filler words gone, and corrections understood. Say "send it Thursday, no wait, Friday" and you get "Send it Friday."
Less training, more languages
Older systems got better as you trained them on your voice. Today's speech recognition works well from the first sentence, and Saywork handles Egyptian Arabic, English and both mixed in the same sentence. You can still add your own words — names, products, jargon — to its dictionary so they come out right.
From dictating to delegating
The bigger change: your voice can now do the task, not just write it. In Saywork you hold Caps Lock and say the job — "draft replies to the three clients who asked about pricing and show me before sending" — and it works in your own Gmail, Sheets, Slack and Chrome, then asks before anything goes out. That's the part of the day dictation software never touched.
What to check before switching
- Specialist vocabulary. If you rely on a medical or legal edition, test your own terms first.
- Where it types. Saywork types wherever your cursor is on Windows 10 and 11.
- Offline. Saywork dictation runs on your own computer when the connection drops, on its paid plans.
- Privacy. Saywork keeps your history, notes and memory on your computer. See our trust and security page.

Is there a free alternative to Dragon?
Windows Voice Typing (Windows + H) is free and built in. Saywork is free to start and adds clean writing, Arabic and English, and an agent that does whole tasks.
Does Saywork need voice training like Dragon?
No. It works from the first sentence. You can add names and terms to its dictionary so they are spelled right.
